"A Rich Velvety Warmth That Will Break Your Heart" – Bearded Magazine

A Multi-Coloured, Multi-Layered Collection Of Groundbreaking Sounds And Ideas That Deserves To Be Treasured” – Music Week

We are extremely proud to give you "South Facing". It's a compilation that looks forwards as well as back with an optimistic heart and a cheeky grin. It’s a meander through the hearts and minds of the labels friends, touching on acoustic whimsy, electronic experimentation, found sounds, lost sounds and everything in-between.

From an unreleased Team LG track through to the mellifluous meanderings of new signing Mariana Ricardo; via the epic and arresting accordion driven Directorsound, duelling banjos of My Two Toms and sultry sun ripened sound of Pilote to name but five.

This is a compilation that refuses to be categorized - by artists who revel in doing whatever comes naturally. "South Facing" is a magical mystery tour; an intriguing journey that delights in teasing the listener - with a new secret to be discovered around every corner. The twelve tracks you find here aren't about uber cool pretensions - they're about fun, freedom and endless possibilities. Songs made by people who refuse to follow the sign posts. No-one ever got lost following a straight path! And we love to get lost!

We are releasing "South Facing" digitally with a delectable and desirable (extremely) limited edition CD. The beautiful artwork was provided by our resident ideas man Sam Wilson (www.wilsonwilson.co.uk) who has excelled himself yet again.

The CD packages are all hand made by the Kennington Recordings team and incorporates their own blood, sweat and gravy (apologies to whomever gets that one!). Pictures of them being made can be found at the Kennington Recordings myspace www.myspace.com/rocksgently Come and say hello.

For people who look up, down, sideways, forwards and back - now’s your chance to look South! Enjoy the views with love from Kennington Recordings!

Music Week

By Anita Awbi - April 20, 2009

Music Week first heard of Kennington Recordings back in 2006 with the release of Team LG’s critically acclaimed long player The Way We Do It, so it seems fitting that this innovative compilation kicks off with a previously unreleased track of theirs, the delightfully candid You Don’t Notice Me. The selection then expands to take in a deliciously diverse range of artists, including sometime Domino act Pilote, who has been an electronic pioneer since the Nineties, building his reputation through a string of eclectic releases and remixing the likes of Bonobo, Turin Brakes and Fujiya & Miyagi. He appears twice here, on the delicate electronica-laced On A Train and also on Mit Den Tremble KidsThe Bowling Song, where he turns out a rare and vocally rich melody. Directorsound, who records for Domino offshoot Geographic, also puts in an appearance here, with the sprawling 10-minute long Beirut-esque Wolfcow. There’s also exciting material from new signings Deekie and TrebleCat, who wade in with the frolicking bass-led TriBeca and the topsy-turvy Drunken Fuss respectively. Kennington Recordings has revealed its true personality with this release; a multi-coloured, multi-layered collection of ground breaking sounds and ideas that deserves to be treasured.

Bearded

May 5th, 2009

From the vaults of Kennington Recordings comes this collection of old gems and new finds, which have been lovingly crafted and carefully dusted down by artists both established and new. It’s a shamelessly homespun effort; a limited edition handmade package with prints and badges, all tied up with brown paper and string. The presentation echoes the music inside, as found sounds and electronic montages rub shoulders with rough acoustic wanderings. It all seems to linger on the outskirts of leftfield, proving it can be warm on the outside too. Like a scrapbook, South Facing feels chronological, timidly starting off with a delicate love song from the label’s first signing Team LG, and ending with latest addition Mariana Ricardo. Both beguiling tracks act like bookends supporting the diverse selection, highlights of which include the rickety gait of TrebleCat’s Drunken Fuss, the heart-rending honesty of Mr L & The Goth’s Boxes, and a live version of Lottie by banjo aficionados My Two Toms. Geographic regular Directorsound chips in with the impressive 10-minute long Wolfcow: an epic accordion-led song which swoops and soars across Baltic folk and English marching music. All the tracks here seem to carry a common thread; a rare ability to impart a rich, velvety warmth and honesty that will break your heart and build your confidence in the growing ‘can-do’ ethic within a faltering industry. It’s a magical insight into the ingenuity and dexterity of a tiny record label willing to push the envelope and take risks to unearth only the most promising artists.
